“Taxiarhis N. Evia” dried figs are derived from fig trees of the Smyrna variety, which are cultivated exclusively in the geographical zone determined specifically by the communities of Taxiarhis, Neos Pyrgos, Ag. Georgios, Orei, Istiaia, Kamaria, Kastaniotissa.

      The collection, processing, manufacturing and packaging of “Taxiarhis N. Evia” dried figs is carried out in the zone specified above.

      “Taxiarhis N. Evia” dried figs must meet the following conditions: a) they must be derived from fig trees of the Smyrna variety, which are cultivated exclusively in the “Geographical Zone” delimited above and which regularly receive all of the traditional cultivating care applied by the fig growers in the region, namely: ploughing and fertilising (organic or inorganic) during the months of October – November, pruning December – January, second ploughing in February, 1 to 2 millings in May – June, and levelling of the fig tree ground before harvesting.

      Figs are gathered daily by hand once the ripe and overripe figs have fallen onto nets located 70 cm above the ground.

      The harvesting – selection – collection of figs is regulated by the attached instructions – rules issued by the Association.

      The first fig selection is carried out by the fig producers and only sizable figs (45 – 55 items/kg) are traded. Figs unsuitable for trade (bad figs) are eliminated.
